Ph.D. Program

Curriculum

The School of Social Work at VCU has the faculty expertise, a relevant and up-to-date curriculum, an environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking and a strong commitment to student learning. We have the ability to be flexible and the freedom to respond to student needs while still maintaining a commitment to academic excellence. Importantly, the doctoral program has a more than 25-year record of graduating scholars and we take pride in following our graduates’ careers wherever it takes them.

The doctoral program at VCU is an important and valuable resource to the school, the community and the profession. We produce and nurture scholars who become role models, leaders and teachers in higher education, policy analysis at the local, state and national levels, program development, and in the administration of human services across a range of fields of practice. Our doctoral faculty and doctoral students provide consultation and training to a variety of human service agencies and programs. While the faculty mentor the field’s future scholars, our doctoral students are often role models and teachers of our B.S.W. and M.S.W. students and help us provide them a broader educational experience.
