Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Student Association

Doctoral Student AssociationThe Doctoral Student Association is comprised of social work doctoral students at various stages on the journey toward completing the Ph.D. Members of the association share a common belief that the student-in-community experience is invaluable for meeting the doctoral program objectives of developing an intellectual community; making connections between philosophy of science, theory, research, and practice; and analyzing and integrating knowledge and values.

The DSA also is a social organization and meets quarterly (or as needed) to ensure that the intellectual community is meeting the needs of the doctoral students. Members plan events and activities, address issues of concern among doctoral students and coordinate gatherings where doctoral students can come together for mutual support and encouragement.

Membership

If you are enrolled as a Ph.D. student in the School of Social Work at VCU, you’re a member. Meetings are posted on the DSA Blackboard site and occur one-to-two times each semester. Each new student’s VCU e-mail address is added to the DSA blackboard site and remains on the site until graduation or the student leaves the program.

Activities

Various announcements for gatherings and program activities will be posted on the DSA Blackboard site, along with requests for help if needed. Students who are interested in a DSA leadership position or who have suggestions for the DSA should contact one of the officers.
