Workforce development
“Workforce development is very personal to me. My father lost his job during the recession of 1981 and ’82, and that created a lot of turmoil for my family. I have that personal experience with unemployment and the impact it can have on individuals and families.
“There’s a quote that I use by Jane Addams, she’s a pioneer social worker and it says, ‘of all the aspects of social misery nothing is so heartbreaking as unemployment....’ I’m not saying everyone has to agree with that sentiment, but it does highlight the reality that in our society, lacking a job presents a major challenge to participating fully in social and economic life.
“If anything, I’ve gotten much more focused on workforce development, job training program development and implementation. It’s very rewarding. I’m actually helping someone, who wouldn’t otherwise have a job, get a job.”
