The four-year growth process

“It’s one of the gratifying things about being an academic, a professor as well as an administrator. You get to see students come in as unpolished stones but you know that there is a gem there. That gem is the desire to help people and the desire to move society forward. Students are motivated to come into this major for a variety of reasons, but wanting to help others is one reason they share in common.

“It’s rewarding to see — as they go through school under the general education program and their major curriculum — how that stone begins to shine as it is polished. By the end, they have developed a sense of confidence and identity, a professional voice and a sense of professional empowerment that they can now use their knowledge, values and skills to make the difference they originally came to the school to learn how to do. It is gratifying for us to see that growth, altruism and desire in our students.”
