M.S.W. Program
Foundation curriculum
The Foundation curriculum provides the social work knowledge base from which concentration study options are established. The goal of foundation study is for students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to apply and carry out core social work practice competencies (relationship building, problem identification, assessment, selecting and planning interventions, implementation and evaluation) with individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations. Foundation practice emphasizes critical thinking, client strengths, commitment to social work values and ethical principles, self-awareness, professional development, evidence-based decision making, multicultural competency, and social and economic justice.
Foundation content area (30 credits)
- The first 30 credits of the program.
- Provides a foundation for developing advanced analytical and practice skills necessary for concentration study.
- Field and classes are concurrent to enhance learning, so students will be able to relate course work to fieldwork; exceptions can be made for students with special learning needs.
- First year field internships are determined by the school.
- Accepted M.S.W. students will receive a request for information about work and volunteer experience and interest in types of field internship placements.
- Foundation field internship placements will be made to expand student practice experience through internship assignment.
The complete curriculum outline can be viewed in the Graduate Bulletin.
Curriculum exceptions
There are exceptions to the structure of the curriculum for those with special learning needs. Students are encouraged to talk to the Director of Student Services, regarding any special needs they may have. All curriculum exceptions must be approved by the M.S.W. program director.

Students are encouraged to retain copies of all syllabi/course outlines for courses they complete as well as the curriculum outline for the graduate and professional programs bulletins. These documents may be essential for future credentialing.
