Trauma Treatment: Ethical Engagement and Basic Principles

« Back to archives

A continuing education activity presented by the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. This program is designed for social workers and their community partners.

Course description and objectives

As our world becomes more connected and media makes events more accessible, episodes of trauma seem to be experienced and witnessed by people everywhere. This three half-day workshop series will provide a foundation for working with clients who have experienced trauma, while preparing the clinician to care for him/herself in the process. The three half-day workshops will meet once a month. The format of the series is designed to allow participants time to integrate the material, complete assignments and explore the application to their current work. Readings will be assigned from four texts which participants are encouraged to purchase on their own from their local bookseller. The reading list will be sent upon receipt of payment and confirmation of registration. Throughout the training, participants will be able to consult with the trainers through e-mail and telephone consultation.
By the end of the workshop series, participants will:

  • Recognize and assess for trauma.
  • Know principles of engagement.
  • Develop treatment plan(s) specific to trauma.
  • Formulate intervention strategies.
  • Develop a plan for clinician self care.

Continuing education units for series: 0.9
Participants who are unable to attend the entire series may register for Day 3 only.
