Scholarship opportunities
B.S.W. Dennis Scholarship
The Dennis Scholarship is awarded to a B.S.W. student who is excelling academically and who also is making a significant contribution to the life of the School of Social Work through extracurricular activities, service projects and volunteer work. Financial need and residency statuses are also considered. Criteria: upper-level B.S.W. student, full-time status, 3.0 minimum GPA. Award amount varies, depending on fund availability. Faculty members nominate students for this scholarship in mid-April.
Pamela Nystrom Memorial Fund
Established by friends and family in honor of Pamela Nystrom (B.S.W./’77), this scholarship is awarded to a B.S.W. student who shows financial need and excels academically. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must be in the upper-level of the B.S.W. program and be full time. Faculty members nominate students for this scholarship in mid-April.
The Rita Schlueter Memorial Scholarship
The Rita Schlueter Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. Joyce O. Beckett, professor emerita in the School of Social Work, with subsequent support from other donors. This award is given to an upper-level B.S.W. student who has a demonstrated understanding of African-American cultures, excels academically and is committed to social work practice with African-Americans. Faculty members nominate students for this scholarship in mid-April.
Wayne C. Hall Scholarship
One undergraduate student may be nominated by faculty to compete for the universitywide undergraduate scholarship of $2,000. The student must be a rising senior with a GPA of at least 3.5. Application information is available from the Office of Student Services. Deadline: Jan. 29.
B.S.W. and M.S.W. financial award opportunity
VCU Child Welfare Education and Support Program
Effective Oct. 1, 2009, as a result of Governor Kaine’s budget reduction measures, the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Social Services will no longer be providing funding for VCU’s Child Welfare Stipend program. Student applications for the Child Welfare Stipend Program can no longer be accepted.
State supported opportunities
Virginia House of Delegates College Internship Program
Legislative internships are available to any junior, senior or graduate student, regardless of major, to work in the legislative process of state government. Stipends are available up to $1,000 for three legislative sessions. Information and applications may be obtained from the intern coordinator, House of Delegates, P.O. Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society Study Abroad Award
Twenty $1,000 Study Abroad Grants will be awarded every academic year to support students to seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Deadline: Mid-Feb. Carl A. Scott Book Scholarship
The Carl A. Scott Book Scholarship is awarded by the Council on Social Work Education in the amount of $500 each academic year. Two awards will be made to students from ethnic groups of color (African-American, American Indian, Asian-American, Mexican-American and Puerto Rican) who are in their last year of study for a social work degree in a baccalaureate or master’s degree program accredited by CSWE. Policy Fellow Award – B.S.W. students
The B.S.W. Students Summer 2004 Policy Fellow Award sponsored by the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (B.P.D.) enables students to gain experience in the areas of political advocacy, lobbying and participating in policy change efforts at the national level. There is a $5,000 stipend. Students spend eight to 10 weeks in Washington, D.C. Application information available from Dr. Susan Kosche' Vallem at (319) 352-8250.
