How can I find out who my adviser is?
Students can call the Office of Student Services for this information at (804) 828-0703.

How can I change my major into or out of social work?
Change of major forms are available online. Students must complete a form and take it to the department of their new major. Students may change their major into social work at any time if they meet the minimum GPA requirement of 2.5.

Can I have a double major or a minor in social work or another subject?
Students who choose a double major must meet the degree requirements of both majors. Students who choose to minor in any subject must meet the requirements set by the individual departments. Information about major and minor requirements is available in the Undergraduate Bulletin. At the time that a student applies for graduation they complete the Application for a Minor and secure the approval of that department. These applications are available at Founders Hall, 827 W. Franklin St.

How can I register for 300- and 400-level social work classes?
Social work majors must submit an Application for Admission to the professional curriculum, which they have obtained from and submitted to their academic adviser. When the application has been approved the student′s classification will be changed, and they may then register for these courses. Students who are minoring in social welfare will need to request an override from the program director.

When do I apply for admission to the professional curriculum?
Students should apply in the semester when they are completing the general education pre-professional curriculum.

How do I find out about the field practicum?
The Field Office holds regular orientations to field. Students need to watch the school calendar for the dates of these meetings.

How do I apply for field?
Field applications are submitted online and are available at the school's field instruction Web site. Students must meet with their adviser to discuss completion of the application and their readiness for field education by the due date. These dates are listed on the school calendar and will also be announced in class.

How do I apply to graduate?
Students will be notified via their VCU e-mail account regarding process for applying for graduation, which will provide instructions for completing the graduation application. Students should then schedule an appointment with their adviser to review and complete the application before it is passed on to the program director and the dean. Visit the eServices Web site for other information.

Can I graduate with honors in Social Work?
Students who are eligible for honors must have earned a 3.3 overall GPA and a 3.6 GPA in the major. They must have completed at least three credits in courses designated “honors” with a grade of “B” or higher. An application for honors in Social Work is available in the information rack outside the Student Services Office, Room 107.

Is there any help given to students who are applying for a job in social work?
Job announcements are posted on a bulletin board on the first floor of the Raleigh Building. Early in the spring semester graduates are invited to return to speak to students about the job search. Watch for information about the date of this workshop. In addition, students are encouraged to use the services of the Career Center, which is located in the University Student Commons.

How do I find out about applying to graduate school?
Information about the M.S.W. Program at VCU is available from the Graduate School located in 901 W. Franklin St. Regular day and evening information sessions are conducted by the admissions coordinator. The director of Student Services also has catalogs from many other graduate social work programs.
